##Chapter 2: One Day, It Will Heal
Camren Lewis, the youngest son of old Mr. Lewis, was only three years older than Ryan and the true power player of the Lewis Group. Even before he was an adult, Camren successfully led Cauldron Group into Verdant Country’s cutthroat financial market. By twenty, he’d already boosted Cauldron Group’s market value to over a hundred billion USD. Safe to say, Camren was the kind of guy other rich brats in the scene looked up
He was ruthless, had a weird, isolated personality, and a strict no–women policy. Rumor had it that when he
was sixteen, he drugged a woman who tried to “climb his bed,” stripped her naked, and left her on the street.
So, for years, no one dared to even mess with him.
Old Mr. Lewis, full of vigor, asked, “So, sweetheart, do you dare to marry him?”
After a moment of shock, Britney sat in silence for a long time before finally saying, “I do.” But then she added, “Will Mr. Lewis agree to it, though?”
“Hahaha…” Old Mr. Lewis burst out laughing. “He’s almost thirty, a confirmed bachelor. Marrying a sweet young lady like you is his blessing. Just try to be understanding of his awful temper.”
“T’ll go talk to him right now. I don’t believe he’d refuse. Just wait for my news.”
“Thank you, Grandpa Lewis.”
After hanging up, Britney felt a knot of anxiety. Would Camren really agree to marry a woman who was almost his nephew’s fiancée? But if she didn’t marry him, her “wonderful” parents would probably force her to cling to Ryan. If it meant sharing her husband with another woman, she might as well take a gamble.
Back at the Simpson family home.
When Britney pushed open the door, she saw Allison Payne, dressed in a designer suit, casually flipping through a magazine on the sofa. Britney bit her lip, her voice hoarse and trembling, “Mom.”
Allison didn’t notice Britney’s abnormality. She continued idly turning the pages of the new collection catalog from a high–end brand, not even lifting her head. “Why are you back so early? Done with the wedding dress fitting?”
“Yeah.” Britney’s face was pale and haggard. The pain of betrayal made her voice drop a few notches, but she didn’t plan to explain anything to Allison. She knew her mother wouldn’t care about her feelings anyway.
Sure enough, she heard Allison continue, “I don’t know what old Mr. Lewis and Ryan see in you. You’re clearly not as good as Skylar in anything.”
“You sure lucked out with a rich husband.”
Britney clenched her fingers, so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Yet, she seemed not to feel it, not
reacting at all ¶
“Alright, alright. You’ve been back so long and still don’t get it, answering your elder with a voice like a mosquito “Allison waved her hand impatiently. “The wedding is in a month. You better learn the rules of high society. Don’t get arrogant just because old Mr. Lewis and Ryan spoil you.
“Go back to your room.”
“Okay” Britney had long grown used to her mother’s belittling. She swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue and dragged her weak body upstairs. She walked into the smallest room in the corner, threw herself onto the bed, and curled up exhaustedly, still shivering. This spring was so cold, really, really cold. Even wrapped tightly in her blanket, she couldn’t feel a speck of warmth.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when a housemaid knocked on her door, saying Mrs. Simpson wanted her. Britney casually put on a jacket and groggily went downstairs. But the moment she saw Ryan and Allison sitting together on the sofa, chatting, she instantly sobered up.
Ryan was the first to notice her. He stood up. “Britney.”
Heaven had been very kind to Ryan, giving him striking good looks. His clear, elegant eyes, when fixed on you, made you instinctively feel important and genuinely attended to. Britney really liked his eyes, even more so after her left ear developed problems. But now, looking into his loving gaze, Britney only felt a stab of irony. “Why are you here?”
“What kind of talk is that?” Allison’s face darkened. She quickly rose and pulled Britney in front of Ryan. “Young Mr. Lewis brought you a present. Don’t be ungrateful.”
Ryan turned and picked up a brocade box, opening it before presenting it to Britney. “I specifically bid for this at the auction for you. It’s a rare set of pink diamond jewelry, it would suit you perfectly.”
“It’ll look amazing with the wedding dress you picked. Want to try it on?”
Britney took a step back, widening the distance between them. “No need.”
Ryan noticed the cold distance in her expression, and a flicker of understanding crossed his eyes. He raised an eyebrow, his deep voice carrying a persuasive tone, “My bad. I knew you didn’t like heavy jewelry, but I still got you this.”
“Tell me what you like, and I’ll find a way to get it for you. Consider it our wedding gift.”
Ryan seemed to humble himself, his posture low, but his tone held an undeniable forcefulness. At this moment, Britney realized she might never have truly known Ryan Lewis. The gentlemanly, modest, and caring facade he usually displayed was merely the side he chose to show her. Even his cheating and keeping a mistress v were, in his mind, just minor inconveniences. He probably thought if he just lowered his head and sweet-talked her, she would generously forgive him and continue loving him with all her heart.
But this time, she was truly done with him.
Chapter
Britney lifted her eyes to meet his, her voice hoarse, each word deliberate and earnest. “Ryan Lewis, there won’t be a wedding. And I don’t need any wedding gifts.”
Ryan’s gaze turned cold. “Britney, there’s a limit to your games.
I’m not playing games.”
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Allison quickly stepped forward and took the jewelry from Ryan’s hand. “Britney can be a bit stubborn and slow to come around, Mr. Lewis. Please don’t mind her. I’ll talk some sense
