You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 579

A guy who’s lived life on the edge could run circles around Brandon, no question.

He took a small step back, crouched down so they were eye to eye, and said, “Don’t want it? Fine—I’ll just take it with me. Don’t blame me if you regret it later.”

Jackson slowly pulled his hand back, ready to leave.

But Brandon was faster. He yanked the file right out of Jackson’s hand.

He ripped open the folder, the sound echoing in the room, and pulled out a single sheet of paper and a USB drive.

The paper was covered in Emerson’s mother’s handwriting. She’d listed every odd detail about her eldest son’s death, and pointed out the strange things her younger son did at the time.

Brandon’s head snapped up the second he finished reading. He looked completely stunned.

How could a mother—so heartbroken when her eldest son died—never once accuse her younger son back then, but now, years later, write something like this herself?

Back when they’d investigated Emerson, they’d met his grandmother. She couldn’t stop gushing about him, showing nothing but love.

But now…

This letter…

What had Patricia done to make this happen?

Jackson glanced back at Brandon with a sly grin. “Gotta say, Mr. Lantz, I’m jealous. Not everyone’s lucky enough to have someone powerful in their corner.”

He patted Brandon on the shoulder. “Hang on to her.”

“Jackson!” Brandon called as Jackson reached the door.

“What did you do to his grandmother?”

Jackson turned and raised an eyebrow. “So you don’t believe she wrote the letter?”

“Don’t you guys have a tech team? Just get them to check the handwriting.”

Jackson just tossed a parting comment over his shoulder and walked out.

As soon as he was gone, Brandon called in his own forensics team to compare the handwriting.

It didn’t take long.

The results said it was a match. Same person.

“Where’d you get this?” one of the techs asked, nudging Brandon.

“That’s what you guys in forensics decided, isn’t it?” Emerson replied.

Brandon didn’t let up. “But I went through the files. They found your fingerprints on the brakes. Care to explain?”

Emerson shrugged. “Way back, my brother’s car broke down. I know a bit about cars, so I helped him check it out. That’s probably when my prints got there. I had an alibi when you first investigated.”

“Who backed up your alibi? Who said you weren’t there?”

“My mother,” Emerson replied softly.

Brandon’s lips twisted into a half-smile. “Is that right?”

He took out a photocopied page from the folder and slid it across the table. “Then why is she accusing you now? This is your mother’s statement about that day—including how you begged her on your knees to cover for you.”

Emerson froze, his face going pale.

“That’s not possible,” he blurted, voice tight and rising. “This has to be fake.”

Brandon leaned in, not letting up. “Forensics already checked. The handwriting’s hers.”

Emerson just sat there, completely stunned.
