Miles gave a thoughtful nod. “She really knows how to see the bigger picture.”
“After dinner, let her head home. Your grandfather’s not in that bad of shape.”
“I thought you were always the one who cared about formalities. If you send her away now, aren’t you worried the Brooks family will be upset?”
“She’s my eldest daughter-in-law. It’s nobody else’s business. As long as you two are good, that’s what matters. If a couple can understand and accept each other, nothing else is more important.”
Miles’s words were crystal clear to Oliver.
If Patricia hadn’t considered his side, if she hadn’t come to Golden Bay, there’s no way Miles would be telling her to go back to Riverdale. But now, seeing Patricia’s character, Miles was willing to make an exception.
Since they were kids, Miles had always set the bar high. He expected discipline, respect, and a sense of responsibility. He’d personally picked both his eldest and second daughters-in-law. Patricia was the only one he’d never actually met before tonight.
So his willingness to bend tonight—it was as good as a nod of approval.
“Thank you, Dad,” Oliver said quietly.
“That’s enough. Go eat something.”
By the time they finished dinner, it was almost ten. Patricia thought she’d be staying over, but to her surprise, Oliver said goodbye to his parents and drove her straight to the airport.
Sitting in the car, Patricia felt on edge, her nerves stretched tight. She twisted the hem of her cardigan, pulling one side lower than the other. “Are you sure this is okay?”
“My dad said so,” Oliver answered. Nothing could have been more reassuring.
Patricia finally let out a shaky breath. She’d always thought Miles looked intimidating on TV, but meeting him in person—he was even more intense. Where Lydia was gentle, Miles was like a silent mountain looming behind you in the dark. The kind of presence that made it hard to breathe.
Oliver saw her go quiet. “Did he scare you?”
“A little,” she admitted.
With his hands on the wheel, Oliver tried to ease the tension. “Honestly, he should be the one scared of you. Someday, when he’s old, you’ll have a third of the vote about pulling his oxygen tube.”
