The hospital room was thick with tension.
Brandon stood firm in front of the door, blocking Tina’s way like he was built for it. He’d seen this coming—he knew Tina would try to force her way in. And he sure as hell couldn’t let her and Emerson see each other right now.
There were still too many loose ends in Jason’s case. No way Emerson pulled it off solo—someone had to be helping him. But who? They didn’t have that answer yet. Now, looking at Tina, the pieces were starting to fit together.
“So what is it, Ms. Klotz? Am I the one breaking the rules here, or are you just twisting them to keep people like us down?”
Brandon’s voice was flat. “When you say ‘people like us,’ are you talking about yourself, or Mr. Martin?”
Tina shot back, “Aren’t we citizens too? Don’t we deserve the protection of the law?”
“The law protects citizens, but it also punishes killers and their accomplices,” Brandon answered, every word ringing out clear. He stood his ground at the foot of Emerson’s bed, making sure Tina couldn’t get anywhere near.
“I bet you’re wondering why we’re not allowing anyone to see Emerson,” he said. “I’ll be straight with you. Emerson admitted to killing Jason, but he hasn’t told us who helped him. Until he does, no visitors.”
He paused, letting the accusation settle between them. “So tell me, Ms. Klotz—why are you in such a hurry to see him?”
It was like he’d stabbed her right in the chest. Brandon might as well have just called her an accomplice to her face. He was practically daring her to prove him right.
Tina didn’t answer. Brandon pulled out a chair, sitting down but still blocking her path. “Well? You coming in or not, Ms. Klotz?”
He made it sound like it was her choice. But everyone in the room knew it wasn’t. If she went in now, she’d basically be admitting guilt.
