Patricia filled Hector in on Kent’s situation in a few quick sentences.
Hector caught on right away. “So you want me to help lure him away, so he quits on his own and you don’t have to pay for firing him?”
“Exactly.”
Hector chuckled, taking a sip of his now-cold tea. “You’ve really picked up some tricks from Oliver, haven’t you?”
That level of shrewdness. She was even more ruthless than most CEOs.
“Honestly, Mr. McKee, Kent’s Emerson’s guy. Spending a single dollar on him just feels like a waste. If I had that kind of money, I’d rather donate it, maybe build some schools somewhere they actually need it. Wouldn’t you?”
Hector laughed. “With that kind of sharp mind, how could I say no to helping you?”
They exchanged a few more pleasantries.
Then Hector started talking about Oliver, full of complaints about him.
Patricia just listened quietly, letting him vent.
But then Hector’s tone changed. “If the old man passes away, you won’t see Oliver in Riverdale anymore.”
Patricia felt a jolt of anxiety in her chest.
She knew the Padilla family was huge, with complicated ties everywhere. On the surface, everything looked picture-perfect, but underneath, it was a mess of secrets and tension.
Before she could say anything, Hector continued, “It’s already been a week. If he was going to recover, he’d be out of the ICU by now.”
It was true. Most people would have left the ICU after a week.
But the old man was getting older, and who knew how things would turn out?
After hanging up, Patricia couldn’t shake the uneasiness inside her.
She’d been so busy with work lately that she’d barely been in touch with Oliver.
Just a few texts here and there, hardly any calls.
And when they did talk, it was always short—just a quick check-in, never more than three minutes.
She hesitated for a moment, then picked up her phone, ready to call Oliver.
