By late August, Riverdale was deep in the dog days of summer. The heat outside was stifling, the kind that made the air shimmer, but stepping into an air-conditioned room felt like slipping into another world.
Except today, Patricia looked like she’d been fished straight out of a pool—her hair damp, skin sticky with sweat, limbs soft and boneless.
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and Mr. Padilla would definitely agree.
Patricia was sprawled across his chest on the big bed, breathing quietly. He reached over and dimmed the lights, his voice low and gentle. “Let me grab you some water, okay?”
Patricia shook her head, just a little.
He couldn’t help but laugh softly. “Come on, baby, you’re drenched.”
“It won’t take long, I promise.”
But she just shook her head again.
He grinned, brushing a stray hair off her face. “Guess it’s my fault—I was gone too long. Left my poor Pattie starving.”
As soon as he said “starving,” Patricia felt a jolt down her spine, a pleasant shiver racing up to her ears until they turned pink.
Mr. Padilla watched her with a smile, his chest shaking with a quiet laugh. “Are you blushing?”
Patricia quickly clapped her hand over his mouth. “Don’t say another word.”
Her mind was still replaying the way she’d glared at him earlier, stubbornly refusing to let him stop. It was embarrassing, really. Since when did she get so greedy?
His laughter was warm and contagious as he kissed her palm. “Alright, alright. I’ll keep quiet.”
After a shower, Mr. Padilla came out to find Marian and the night maid putting on fresh sheets. The maid’s face turned crimson when she saw Oliver carrying Patricia out of the bedroom. She grabbed the bedding and practically ran.
“You’re headed the wrong way—that’s the kitchen,” Marian called after her.
Still blushing, the maid muttered, “Marian, it’s way too late for this stuff.”
Marian just smiled knowingly. “A little distance does wonders for a couple. Give it a few days.”
