“Ms. Klotz, I just can’t do this anymore. Patricia’s got it out for our department at every turn. How are we supposed to close deals if we have to file a receipt for every little thing, even a cup of tea?”
“The auditors might as well move in with us. Every few days they’re on me about receipts for ten bucks here, twenty bucks there. I even offered to pay the difference myself, but that’s not good enough for them.”
“I’ve worked alongside you and Mr. Martin for years. When have I ever had to put up with this kind of crap?”
In the apartment study, Kent sat across from Tina, his frustration obvious as he pounded his fist against his knee. Every word he said was dripping with anger toward Patricia.
Anyone could see she was making things difficult for him, and the situation was anything but certain. Kent was in his early forties, manager of Martin Group’s sales department. Just a few days ago, he’d told himself to hang in there—a good job was hard to find, especially these days.
But last night, while out with a client, he’d run into Mr. McKee from Pacific Capital. The guy made it clear he liked what Kent brought to the table. There was a definite hint of an offer.
How could Kent not be tempted?
“Kent, we’ve worked side by side for years. For me, can you just stick it out a little longer?” Tina’s voice was gentle but firm. She knew if Kent left, she’d lose her right-hand man. No matter what, she couldn’t let that happen.
“Ms. Klotz, I just can’t keep taking orders from a kid like her. It’s humiliating.”
Tina rubbed her temples, her head starting to ache.
“Kent, if you quit now, isn’t that exactly what Patricia wants? Are you really going to let her push you out?”
“If you leave, what do you think everyone else will say? That you got driven out by a rookie? Is that the story you want people to tell?”
“If you stay and we deal with Patricia together, I promise the company will reward you. You know I’ll see to it.”
