“Ms. Klotz, take a good look—are you really sure Mr. Lawrence is on your side?”
Patricia leaned back in her chair, watching Tina clutch the photo. She twirled a pen between her fingers, clicking it on and off, the tiny sound tapping through the tension in the room. It wasn’t loud, but it was just annoying enough to get under your skin.
“Kent and Pacific Capital have already made their moves. But Aunt Tina, you’re still convinced Mr. Lawrence is loyal to you? Come on, isn’t that a little funny?” Patricia’s voice oozed with sarcasm. “Wishful thinking? One-sided loyalty?”
She didn’t stop there. “Honestly, I’ve always thought your judgment was terrible, Ms. Klotz. If picking the right people was a bet, you’d have lost your shirt ages ago.”
Without warning, Tina snapped and threw the photo at Patricia’s face. Patricia closed her eyes just as the sharp edge of the laminated photo scraped her cheek, leaving thin red scratches.
Jackson rushed over and yanked Tina’s arm back, yelling, “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
“Jackson!” Patricia barely glanced at him. She touched her face, saw the blood on her fingertips, and let out a cool, amused laugh. “What’s wrong, Ms. Klotz? Already losing your temper? This is just the beginning. Wait until the audit team starts digging into your department. That’s when you’ll really have a reason to be mad.”
Tina shot back, her voice tight, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing, Patricia. You just want to pin something on me, make sure I can’t get out clean.”
She leaned over the desk, practically snarling. “You think you can wipe me out? Keep dreaming. I’ve been running this company with your Uncle Emerson for years. My people are everywhere. Maybe you can clean house at headquarters, but what about everywhere else? If you think you can outplay us, go for it. The board only cares about your results. If you can’t deliver in six months, they’ll eat you alive.”
She glared, voice rising. “Let’s see how long you can keep that smug look on your face.”
Tina was shaking with anger, both hands pressed to the desk like she wanted to jump across it and go for Patricia’s throat.
