The living room was thick with tension.
Oliver looked more serious than usual. He almost never smoked, and definitely not inside the house, but tonight he lit up anyway. The smoke curled around him, softening his sharp features and making him seem even harder to read.
Even his voice was impossible to figure out. “So, tell me—what kind of gentle guy are you planning to introduce your Aunt Patricia to?”
Sara froze, not daring to answer.
Oliver leaned in, tapping his cigarette into the ashtray that Johns handed over.
His next words came out sharp and loud, making Sara sit up straighter. “I said, speak!”
Sara shrank, glancing at Patricia with pleading eyes. “I… I was just joking. I’ve been reading too many memes online, I swear I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“Are you stupid? Quoting internet jokes at home, stirring up drama between family members? Sara, you really haven’t learned a thing these past few years.”
“I won’t do it again,” Sara mumbled, her eyes welling up, looking like she might burst into tears at any second.
It was hard not to feel sorry for her.
Marian, standing off to the side, gently tugged at Patricia’s sleeve, silently asking her to step in and calm things down.
Patricia opened her mouth to say something.
But Oliver caught her eye with a cold, warning glare.
Patricia’s words died in her throat.
She remembered what Oliver had said to her that morning in the closet. Mimicking his tone, she asked, “Mr. Padilla, were you this mean to your ex-girlfriends too?”
The room went silent.
Roger just stared.
Sara’s jaw practically hit the floor. Did she really just say that?
Marian’s eyes went wide.
Oliver’s hand froze, cigarette halfway to his lips.
The cigarette slipped from his fingers, landing on the carpet and instantly burning a tiny hole.
He snatched it up and tossed it into the ashtray, jaw clenched and face dark. He didn’t say a word.
