“Back already? Where’d you run off to so early?”
Patricia had barely stepped out of the car when Marian hurried over. “Did you tell Mr. Padilla you were heading out this morning?”
“I told him last night. Why, what’s up?” Patricia felt a flicker of unease in her chest.
Marian sighed. “Mr. Padilla seemed off all morning. He looked really upset.”
Patricia shrugged. “Let him sulk.”
She’d spoiled him enough as it was.
Marian’s eyes went wide at Patricia’s indifference. “You can’t just ignore him! You two are married. You have to talk things out. If you keep letting problems pile up, your relationship will fall apart.”
“His mood swings are his problem, not mine. I’m not the one acting unpredictable.”
Patricia headed inside, but Marian caught her by the arm. “Sweetheart, you need to find a way to make him back down. If both of you keep digging in your heels, nothing’s going to work.”
“It’s always either he gives in or I do. If you don’t want to be the one getting steamrolled, you have to stand your ground. But if you both keep fighting for the upper hand, you’ll just wear each other out.”
Patricia stopped and looked at her in disbelief. “Didn’t you tell me last time to just let it go and focus on the outcome, not the process?”
Marian grinned and shook her head. “Every situation needs a different approach.”
Patricia just stared at her, speechless.
Later, in the bathroom, Patricia absentmindedly squirted some soap into her hands and started washing up.
Oliver stood in the doorway, trying to keep things casual. “Did everything go okay this morning?”
“Yeah, it was fine.”
“It’s not your past,” Oliver blurted out, his voice tense. “I’m not like that. Once I decide on something, I stick with it. Marrying you was the clearest decision I ever made, not some calculated move.”
“The truth is, I just want you to be mine. Only mine. That’s why I get these crazy thoughts. It’s not your fault. It’s me. I’ll work on it, I swear. Just give me a chance, okay?”
“When you love someone this much, it’s hard not to get a little possessive. I’m just a regular guy, Pattie. I have flaws. I’m sorry.”
He pulled her into his arms, holding her close. Patricia took a deep breath, trying to find the right words.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. Johns’ calm voice came from the hallway. “Sir, your father’s here. He just arrived at the gate.”
“Got it.”
Oliver let her go, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. “Sara’s dad is here. Do you want to go upstairs and get ready, or come out and greet him with me?”
