You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 630

“I’m going upstairs to change.”

After coming home from jail, all Patricia wanted was to get out of those clothes and into something fresh.

Marian followed her up the stairs, carrying a steaming bowl of bird’s nest soup. “Drink this while it’s hot,” she said, pressing it into Patricia’s hands.

Patricia looked at her, a little puzzled. “Why are you here?”

She wasn’t really asking about Marian. They both knew she meant Jaxon. Why had he shown up out of nowhere?

Marian shook her head. “Johns never mentioned anything. I think he just dropped by last minute.”

Normally, if anyone was coming up to the house, they’d at least let the staff know that morning. The kitchen had to prep, and the guest rooms needed to be ready. That’s just how things were run.

Patricia nodded. “Okay. You can head downstairs. I’ll come down in a bit.”

Marian hesitated. “Mr. Oliver said to remind you to finish the soup before you come down.”

Patricia managed a small smile. “I know.”

She paused, spoon halfway to her mouth. “Did you get the money I sent yesterday?”

Marian’s face lit up. “I did! Actually, I meant to tell you—Mr. Oliver sent me a payment too, but I was too nervous to take it.”

Patricia looked surprised. Oliver never handled these things. Johns usually took care of all the household stuff, and Patricia herself looked after Marian and Jackson. When did Oliver start sending money?

“He sent it to you himself? Why?”

Marian blushed, a little embarrassed. “He said it was to thank me for looking after you. I told him it’s part of my job, and you already pay me enough, so I didn’t take it.”

Patricia laughed. “Next time, just take it. He’s got plenty to spare.”

Marian just mumbled a shy reply.

Patricia changed into a simple white dress, letting her hair fall loose over her shoulders. She curled up on the sofa, sipping at the soup.

She was about to head downstairs when Johns appeared. “Mr. Oliver asked me to let you know that he and Mr. Jaxon are in the tea room talking. He said you don’t need to come down.”
