“Patricia’s not really our crowd. If we go, we’ll just end up bored out of our minds.”
“Totally!” Bella echoed, and the rest of the group murmured in agreement.
Ruby glanced around, her eyes settling on Wendy. She caught the little crease in Wendy’s brow.
Ruby just chuckled. “Let’s go anyway.”
Bella, thinking she’d regained some ground, grinned. “See you there then.”
“Honestly, Ruby, we’re only going because of you. None of us really know Patricia.”
As everyone was leaving the VIP lounge, a sales associate standing off to the side gave Ruby a thumbs-up. “Ms. Martin, you’re amazing. I could never stay that cool talking to them.”
Ruby had even managed to set them up a little.
“It gets easier with experience,” she replied, picking up her things and heading out.
Later, when Bella was paying the bill, the same sales associate happened to walk in. Their eyes met for a second.
Bella smirked and told the manager, “From now on, none of us want her serving us.”
The sales associate stiffened. At the end of the day, a salesperson was still just staff—how dare she let Ruby stroll in without a word? She should’ve known their money wasn’t so easy to earn.
In Ruby’s black Mercedes, Wendy sat in the passenger seat, throwing her a worried look. “You’re really going? Feels like Bella just wants to see you embarrass yourself.”
“Let them watch. There are tons of people waiting for me to mess up. A few more won’t make a difference.”
Wendy hesitated. “Aren’t you worried they might try to set you up?”
Ruby grinned. “You think they could pull off anything Patricia hasn’t already tried?”
As they pulled out of the parking lot, something crossed Ruby’s mind. “Tell me about Bella’s fiancé.”
“He’s the youngest son of the Maruco family from Golden Bay.”
“I heard their family’s in shipping. I looked him up—his older brother’s always in the media, but the younger one’s barely seen. I’ve met him twice—tall, skinny, doesn’t really seem like a guy who’s built for everyday life.”
“Thanks. I’ll drop you at the next corner. Will you be okay getting a ride from there?”
