The sky was just starting to turn gold when Oliver got home.

Patricia was curled up on the sofa outside the study, completely lost in a classic English novel. She looked so absorbed she didn’t even notice Oliver standing in the doorway, just quietly watching her.

There was something different about her tonight—she looked so relaxed, like all her worries had finally melted away. She seemed at peace, almost lazy with contentment.

Oliver stood there for a few minutes, just taking it all in. Then he walked over, grabbed a blanket, and draped it over her legs, which were dangerously close to being exposed. Thank goodness, he thought, other than Marian, no one usually came upstairs. Otherwise, he probably would’ve had to say something sooner.

Patricia sat up, propping herself on her elbows. “When did you get back?”

Oliver took the book from her hands, ready to set it aside. Then he paused, folded the page she was on, and only then put it down.

“Just now,” he said.

Patricia made a small sound, then glanced at the window. “Didn’t you say you’d be back tonight?”

He’d told her this morning he had to go to a neighboring city for work, and when she asked when he’d be home, he said, “Probably tonight.” But the sky was still bright—it definitely wasn’t night yet.

“I skipped the dinner. Said I had family stuff and left early.”

He patted his thigh and nodded at her. “Come here.”

Patricia shifted and settled on his lap, her long hair spilling over his suit jacket, the two of them tangled up in a way that was both close and a little bit teasing.

Oliver had these funny little habits—nothing bad, just quirks Patricia still found odd. Whenever she sat near him or on his lap, he liked to wrap his hand around her waist, his fingers pressing gently into her sides, almost like he was giving her a slow massage.

It tickled, but it didn’t hurt.

She didn’t totally get it, but figured she could let him have his thing.
