Ruby stood in the doorway, taking in the office with a careful glance.
This place had been through three different owners, but now it looked exactly like it did when the first one was here. She remembered—Jason always liked things simple and clean. Then Emerson moved in and swapped everything out for trendy, Asian-inspired décor. After more than ten years, Patricia took over, and everything went back to how it was in the beginning. Looking at it now, it felt like Emerson was just a blip, a brief interruption.
In the end, the office belonged to Jason’s parents again. Everything looked the same, but the people were different, and that made Ruby’s chest ache with a bittersweet kind of pain.
She dragged her eyes away from the room and settled them on Patricia. For a second, Ruby couldn’t tell if it was Patricia’s smug smile or the glare of sunlight behind her that hurt more.
“So… should I say congratulations?” Ruby’s voice was soft.
Patricia smiled, her finger idly tracing the rim of her coffee cup, her eyes shining with a winner’s pride. “If you want to, I don’t mind hearing it.”
“You got what you wanted. Are you happy now?”
Patricia smirked. “You said it yourself. I got what I wanted. Of course I’m happy.”
“What do you want from us? What will it take for you to leave us alone?”
Leave them alone? The words made Patricia laugh a little under her breath.
Eye for an eye, she thought. She hadn’t even made them pay with their lives—just sent them to jail. Leave them alone? Where had their mercy been when her own parents needed it?
People never really get it until it happens to them.
Patricia’s gaze curled over Ruby like vines, wrapping her up, her eyes glinting with something close to cruelty. “Is this you… begging for mercy?”
Ruby held her breath.
Patricia let out a short, cold laugh. “Pretending to be the real Miss for so long, you forgot how to beg sincerely?”
