You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 687

“Mr. McKee, that guy’s here again.”

Hector had just come back from the legal department on the sixteenth floor, not even a chance to take off his jacket, when his assistant rushed over with the news.

As if his day wasn’t already a disaster. The company was neck-deep in a messy property dispute, and Hector was the one stuck trying to fix it.

It all started with a government deal gone wrong. After a chemical plant’s toxic land was supposedly cleaned up, nobody bought it, so it ended up dumped on them. The person in charge hadn’t bothered to do a thorough inspection, so now that land was just sitting there, completely useless.

Oliver always acted friendly, but when things went south, he was the first to crank up the pressure on Hector. Lately, though, Oliver was on a whole new level—anything that rubbed him the wrong way and he’d blow up. He used to just yell at Sara and her team, but now even Hector wasn’t safe.

Basically, Hector was getting the full corporate experience—stress, blame, and no end in sight.

So now, fresh from a tense meeting, already fuming, Hector’s patience was worn thin when his assistant stopped him in the hallway.

“Can’t anyone else handle this? If security downstairs can’t deal with a simple trespasser, maybe we need new security.”

His assistant flinched. “I’ll talk to them again.”

It was honestly weird. Some ex-exec from Martin Group had been showing up every day, hanging around like it was his new job—staking out Mr. McKee. No one could figure out what he wanted. If he was looking for a job, why not just send in a resume? What was he hoping to get, waiting around the lobby?

Security had tried to kick him out a few times, but the guy made such a scene that the guards started getting nervous. They didn’t want to risk him causing a real incident in the building.

About forty minutes later, Hector headed downstairs to meet a land inspector from Golden Bay.

As soon as the elevator doors slid open, Kent spotted him and hurried over.

“Mr. McKee, do you remember me? I was the sales manager at Martin Group—Kent.”

Hector looked at him like he was a stranger. “What do you want?”

Kent’s voice was tight with anxiety. “Last time, you said if I was interested, I could come work at Pacific Capital. Do you remember saying that?”
