“Mr. Martin, Ann’s here again.”
Patricia set her bag on the desk and turned to Colby. “Is this just a coincidence, or have you still not figured out who’s behind it?”
Two days in a row was a bit much.
“I’ve already found out. Yesterday I told HR and Legal, and they escorted the person out. Today must just be a coincidence.”
Patricia pressed her lips together, her smile cold. “If that’s the case, let her in.”
Ann rushed in, just like always, but she still managed to look put together. She knew it wasn’t right to show up empty handed when asking for help, so she brought an orange Hermès bag with her.
“I wasn’t sure what you’d like, Mr. Martin, so I picked out a bag. I hope you like it.”
Patricia glanced at the bag. “I haven’t even done anything for you yet, Ann. I can’t accept this.”
A bag? She had more than enough. Every season, Oliver sent so many clothes and accessories to Cloud Peak that she could use them for the rest of her life and still have plenty left over.
Ann’s smile faded a little.
“Is it just too difficult?”
“Ann, take it easy.” Patricia poured her a glass of water and handed it over. “Mr. Padilla promised me last night he’d look into it, but it’s only been one night. Don’t you think you’re rushing things a bit?”
She kept her tone friendly, but there was no room for argument. “I do know Mr. Padilla, but not well enough to push him to hurry. I hope you understand.”
Ann was clearly anxious. Years ago, she’d taken a huge risk to have her son, and letting him grow up with his grandmother had always made her feel guilty. She’d wanted to bring him back when he was older, to finally make things right. Instead, he started getting into trouble before he even graduated college. He was the only heir to the Sharp family name. If anything happened to him, her marriage would be completely shattered.
“I’m sorry. I’m just too anxious. You’re busy, Mr. Martin. I won’t bother you anymore.”
Jackson walked by with a mug, stopped, and peeked in. “What’s going on? Someone send you a bomb?”
“No. Ann brought Mr. Martin a bag, and Mr. Martin gave it to me.”
Jackson shrugged. “Then just take it.”
“But it’s super expensive.”
“My Miss has no shortage of money. It’s just a Hermès. Mr. Padilla never waits for someone else to buy her gifts.”
Colby still felt weird about it. “But what if Mr. Martin didn’t already have this color?”
“What if Mr. Padilla already bought her this exact one? If she brings it home, it’ll look like she’s saying she doesn’t like what he picks. Just keep it. You’re doing my Miss a favor.”
