“Even if you did notice, you wouldn’t ask.”
“But if I asked you what Ruby’s been up to lately, you could tell me everything. In your eyes, I matter less than some stranger.”
The argument was right on the edge of exploding. Oliver stood in front of Patricia, cold and tense, his anger filling the room. The only thing either of them could hear was their breathing, heavy and uneven.
Patricia looked up at him from the bed, her voice quiet after a long pause. “You promised you’d support me.”
“I do support you. I support you more than anyone. I even get why you’re doing this. But Patricia, I can stand by you for revenge, I really can, but I can’t handle you dragging it out, waiting for Theo to come back before you finally deal with it.”
“You have problems with me, you judge me, but you never say it to my face. You hold it in and make me guess, make me worry. You treat me like one of your business rivals, setting traps and watching me fall in. And all of this because you’re mad I’m taking too long? Or is it because I met with Theo?”
Oliver’s brow was tight, his eyes cold as he stared her down. His voice was sharp, angry, and too loud. “Sometimes, I feel pathetic. I’m so scared you’ll think I’m controlling that I won’t even ask you anything. Then, when everything finally blows up, I’m the one getting questioned by you.”
“You don’t need a husband. You should just get a lover. Pay him, call him when you want him, tell him to stay away when you don’t. Make sure he keeps his eyes shut and his mouth shut too, only showing up when you snap your fingers. Isn’t that what you really want?”
“Oliver, Mr. Padilla, I’m your wife. I’m not your employee. If being married means walking on eggshells and second-guessing each other every day, then why are we even together? Maybe we should just—”
“Patricia!”
Oliver’s shout cut her off. The second he realized what she was about to say, he grabbed her arm, pulling her halfway off the bed so she was right in front of him.
“If you dare say those words, I swear I’ll kill you.”
