His face twisted with anger and pain, but underneath it all, Patricia could see the fear—the kind that made him desperate to keep her quiet. He looked like he was about to explode, but somehow, he forced himself to hold back.
Patricia was so thin, her arm barely filled half his palm. Oliver stared at her like he’d lost his mind, eyes burning. “On the surface, you act obedient and sweet, like you’re letting me make all the decisions. But deep down, you’re stubborn. You’ve been fighting against me since the moment I spoke up about Jackson. Sure, I had issues with him, but did I ever tell him to leave? He chose to move to the company. Yet you blame me for everything.”
“You ignore the people I arrange for you. You go out alone, keep everyone at a distance. Every single thing you do is your way of pushing back.”
“You really think I can’t see how unhappy you are with me? You always say I keep secrets, that I make you guess how I feel. But aren’t you doing the same thing to me?”
“You’re my wife. You say you love me, and you know how controlling I am. Still, you keep doing things to make me doubt you, to make me feel insecure. Patricia, do you even know how much that hurts? You call me sick, you say I’m obsessed with control, but you never admit that it’s because you never give me the security I need.”
“Stop and think for a second. If you were the one who felt unsafe, what would I do for you?”
“You complain that I’m messed up, but you keep poking at my wounds. You take away my medication. You watch me unravel. You let me get worse, then you talk to me like I’m some misbehaving dog, saying I’m sick, that I’m no good. If I’m so terrible, what does that make you?”
“All you care about is those people—the ones who killed your parents. You can even be kind to a stranger like Brandon, but with me? I’m just a burden. I’m in your way.”
“Most couples would at least tell each other where they’re going, what time they’ll be home. But you? You act like that’s too much to ask.”
“Just because the train hasn’t gone off the rails doesn’t mean everything’s fine.”
“Trains need maintenance every day. But you? You won’t even stop at the station for a check.”
She didn’t even want to go back to Cloud Peak anymore. On the drive home tonight, she kept glancing at Chelsea, hinting again and again that she wanted to go back to her apartment, hoping Chelsea would offer to take her in. Did he really think she didn’t notice? Did he think she was blind?
“You say you care about me, you say you care about our future kids. You come up with all these excuses, but in the end, it’s just so you can keep me close, keep me where you can see me. You can keep telling yourself you’re doing it for love, but I see right through you.”
