Patricia held onto the word “enjoy” like her life depended on it. Really enjoy. Completely. No holding back.
…
That night, Patricia didn’t go back to Cloud Peak. She didn’t just stay away, either. She texted Johns and asked her to tell Marian to take a week off. Giving Marian time off basically meant Patricia wasn’t planning on going back to Cloud Peak anytime soon. With Jackson gone, Marian on break, and Oliver away, what was left for her there anyway?
In Chelsea’s apartment, Patricia dropped her bag by the door, went straight to her old room, grabbed some pajamas, and disappeared into the bathroom.
By eleven thirty, she was crouched in front of the coffee table, checking emails on her laptop. The only light in the place came from a single floor lamp.
Chelsea came home unexpectedly that night. As soon as she opened the door and spotted someone crouched by the couch, she froze, a little dazed, actually wondering for a second if she’d walked into the wrong apartment. She shut the door, glanced at the number, and finally relaxed.
She hadn’t made a mistake.
“What are you doing here?” Chelsea asked. “Did you two have a fight? Are you running away from home?”
Patricia pulled her gaze away and replied, cool as ice, “You ask too many questions.”
The main lights flicked on. Patricia squinted, raising her hand to shield her eyes from the sudden brightness.
Chelsea set her takeout on the coffee table and looked at her seriously. “So you really had a fight? Did he kick you out?”
But when she opened the fridge, it was packed with fruit, drinks, fresh veggies… It actually looked like someone lived there.
Chelsea blinked, thinking maybe she was so tired she was seeing things. She closed the fridge, took a breath, and opened it again. Still full.
“Patricia, are you planning to settle in here or something? Move in for good?”
Patricia didn’t even look up. “Is that a problem?”
“Not for me. I mean, I don’t mind, honestly. When I’m alone, I can barely manage to feed myself. Now that you’re here, I don’t have to worry about that. But… what about your husband?”
