“As long as you’re cool with it.”
Chelsea grabbed an orange juice from the fridge, shut the door, and walked over to Patricia. She took a couple of sips, then looked at her. “So, you two really had a fight? Judging by how much stuff you brought, are you planning to stay here for a while?”
“Can’t I?”
“What about Jackson and Marian?”
“Marian’s on break. And Jackson, well… he lives in your building now.”
Chelsea’s eyes widened. “No way. I have a servant now…”
Patricia shot her a glare.
Chelsea caught herself and backtracked right away. “Kidding. I mean, it’s nice we’re all close. We can look out for each other.”
Ugh. She’d let her excitement slip and almost messed it up.
Patricia didn’t buy her excuse. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Leave him alone. And if you know any decent girls, maybe introduce them to him.”
Chelsea laughed. “Everyone I know is a research geek. How many women in national science are actually looking to date? We’re all a little weird by this point. Most just want a guy around, but not one to stick with long-term. Jackson’s fun for a fling, but for real life? Not happening.”
Patricia let it go, her eyes back on the data on her laptop.
After dinner, Chelsea took her takeout box to the hallway for the cleaning lady to pick up later. She showered, changed into comfy pajamas, and curled up on the sofa with her phone. Time to get the latest from Sara.
Chelsea: Did they seriously fight?
Sara replied instantly with a wild nodding meme.
“Dad, you don’t even care about me.”
“I only care about when you’ll leave me alone. You’ve been back for a few days and I’m already losing it.” Jaxon sounded genuinely annoyed. Blood or not, she was still a pain.
“It’s not like I want to be here. If Uncle Oliver and Aunt Patricia hadn’t fought, we wouldn’t have been sent back to Golden Bay. It’s not just a fight either. Uncle Oliver’s in Switzerland for work, and Aunt Patricia moved out. If this keeps going, they’re definitely getting divorced.”
Jaxon’s brow knotted. He finally put down his papers and looked at her, all serious. “Tell me everything. What happened?”
Sara rolled her eyes. “Like you’d understand. You’re an old guy. Go get Mom and Aunt Katie.”
Jaxon’s face fell. He pressed his lips together, annoyed, but he still called his wife and told her to bring Katie over too.
A few minutes later, Jimmy and Katie arrived. To keep Sara from making stuff up, they even brought Roger. Together, they filled everyone in on what was going on.
