Oliver didn’t wait for the doctor. He picked Patricia up and rushed straight to the hospital, his mind spinning with worry. Private clinics were out of the question. He just headed for the closest hospital, no hesitation at all. Aiden drove, weaving through traffic, while Lincoln made calls to get a doctor ready.
They made it to the city hospital in record time. In the emergency room, Patricia was half-conscious from the pain. She felt something warm trickling out and, before anyone could run any tests, she grabbed the doctor’s arm and said, her voice barely above a whisper, “I’m pregnant. Another hospital already confirmed it.”
The doctor let out a long breath, clearly relieved. Even the hospital director came out to meet them at the entrance. Oliver’s face was so dark it looked like a storm was about to break. The staff knew they couldn’t afford to make a single mistake. If anything went wrong, jobs would be on the line.
After Patricia explained that she was pregnant and it had been confirmed, the doctor leaned over her. “Is your stomach hurting a lot? Let’s get you to the OB ward.”
Everything moved fast. By the time Patricia was wheeled into obstetrics, the doctors were ready and waiting.
Inside the exam room, Oliver stayed behind the curtain. He couldn’t keep his hands from shaking. When the family doctor arrived to talk with the director, the curtain was pulled back. The on-call doctor peeled off her gloves and tossed them into the trash.
Oliver was about to ask a question, but the director beat him to it. “Dr. Quinn, what’s the situation?”
“She’s pregnant. Looks like there’s a risk of miscarriage in these early weeks. She’ll need to stay here for observation and rest.”
“Should we get her admitted now?”
She was pregnant. His wife was pregnant. At such a crucial moment, she’d known, but she hadn’t told him. He kept thinking he must have been awful. He must have hurt her so much that she didn’t want to share this with him. This was supposed to be the happiest news, but she kept it to herself.
Patricia drifted in and out of sleep, her mind foggy. Somewhere in the haze, she thought her hand was soaking in water, something wet covering her skin. She tried to pull away, but her hand wouldn’t move.
Hector and Chelsea hurried to the hospital as soon as they heard. They bumped into each other in the elevator. Chelsea was anxious, her face tense with worry. Hector, on the other hand, just looked lost. For him, marriage had always seemed complicated, full of endless ties and responsibilities. He figured if you stayed single, you avoided the mess, but if you took the plunge, you had to deal with everything that came with it.
From his point of view, he didn’t care if people chose to walk into marriage’s so-called grave. But Oliver and Patricia were already there, and at this point, second thoughts didn’t matter anymore.
