When Oliver asked, Hector’s heart skipped a beat. He could practically feel it pounding in his throat.
Thankfully, Chelsea kept her cool. She shook her head. “No idea. She’s been really busy lately. We haven’t talked about anything like that.”
Oliver gently tucked Patricia’s hand under the blanket before getting up to follow Hector out. On his way past Chelsea, he told her to call him right away if Patricia woke up.
Chelsea nodded.
As soon as they left, she felt the tension in the room disappear. It was so much easier to breathe without Oliver there. He always had this intensity about him, like he sucked the air right out of the space.
She was glad Hector had warned her. If she hadn’t known to be careful, she could’ve said the wrong thing and set Oliver off. The way he looked right now, he could’ve easily turned into one of those grief-crazed men from a drama, tearing the place apart.
Outside the room, Hector glanced at the closed door. “You’ve got an interview tomorrow morning. You have to go.”
“I can’t.”
“You don’t have a choice.” Hector had expected this reaction, which was exactly why he hadn’t let Lincoln handle it. “It’s just one interview, Oliver. Chelsea’s staying with Patricia. What are you still worried about?”
“Chelsea?” Oliver let out a short laugh. He knew Chelsea too well. If she really hadn’t known about Patricia’s pregnancy, the first thing she would’ve done was come in here and start throwing jabs at him. But she’d been quiet, not a single harsh word. There was no way she was clueless. Someone must have tipped her off and told her to behave.
Patricia was fine for now. Chelsea wasn’t about to confess, and he didn’t see any point in pressing her.
Instead, he looked at Hector. “Since when are you and Chelsea so close?”
Hector didn’t even blink. “We live in the same building, and with you and Patricia, we’re always running into each other. It’s hard not to talk sometimes.”
Oliver wasn’t buying it. Hector was never the type to get involved in other people’s messes unless he had a reason. It was obvious he was interested in Chelsea.
Marian was in the room, pacing in circles. When she saw Oliver come in, her whole face brightened with relief and she hurried over to him. “Sir, she still hasn’t woken up. She’s been sleeping for so long and hasn’t eaten a thing. This isn’t good.”
“Should we ask the doctor?”
He nodded, his voice low. “Go ask.”
The doctor was calm and said it was normal.
Normal? How could it be normal for someone to sleep this long without eating? Marian was still worried, and Oliver was even more anxious than she was.
By one in the afternoon, he’d already arranged for Patricia to be transferred to a private hospital.
