By the seventh day of the rumors swirling around, everyone at Golden Bay was starting to lose their cool. No one from the Padilla family had stepped in to handle the mess. Oliver wasn’t angry, not at all like they’d expected. In fact, he seemed completely unbothered, as if none of it was worth his attention.

Patricia stuck to her normal routine. She went to work every day, but instead of taking the car, she now flew straight from Cloud Peak to the top floor of the Martin Group building by helicopter. With the roads icy and dangerous, this actually worked out perfectly for Mr. Padilla.

Sitting in her office on the top floor, Patricia flipped through a stack of documents. Colby stood in front of her, filling her in on Emerson’s latest drama.

“Emerson’s lawyer has started selling off his assets,” Colby said. “Some things fetched a good price, but others are still stuck in limbo. The lawyer wants to know if you’d consider putting up cash to take over the properties now. That way, the profits would be maximized and there wouldn’t be as much risk.”

Patricia lifted her lips in a faint, almost amused smile. “That’s the lawyer’s idea?”

“That’s what he said,” Colby replied.

“If he thinks it’s such a great opportunity, why doesn’t he put up the cash himself?” Patricia’s voice was casual, almost bored, as she turned another page. Her head was tilted down, forehead smooth and pale, the elegant line of her neck bent just so. She looked almost unreal, like someone had carefully sculpted her.

Colby noticed she seemed even slimmer than the last time he saw her. At first, he’d chalked it up to stress, but then Jackson mentioned the real reason.

She was pregnant.
