You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 814

He was locked up, with no chance of ever turning things around. There was nothing left for him to gain from Emerson, not now, not ever.

“Ms. Martin.”

“Kennedy.”

“You look a lot thinner these days, Ms. Martin.” Kennedy couldn’t stop himself from pointing it out. Ruby seemed so fragile, like she might topple over if the wind picked up. There was none of that old spark about her, none of the brightness she used to carry.

Ruby tried to smile, but it barely reached her eyes. It was the kind of smile you put on when you don’t have the energy to answer.

“So, Kennedy, what did you want to talk about?”

Kennedy noticed she wasn’t in the mood for chit-chat, so he cut right to it. He pulled a tablet from his bag and handed it to her. “Most of the properties your father left behind have been sold off, except for two. There’s the retirement villa in Blue Ridge, and a beachfront house, also in Blue Ridge. If we sell them quickly, we’ll have to accept a lot less than what they’re worth. Your father’s hope was that you could talk to Patricia, see if she’d buy them at the original price instead.”

Ruby let out a short, almost incredulous laugh. “Kennedy, you must have the wrong idea about Patricia. Do you really think she’d ever agree to that?”

“She owns a third of those properties. If the terms are good, she might at least think about it.”

“You really don’t know her. She’d rather give up her share than let me catch a break.”

“Honestly, if I showed up at her door and brought this up, she’d probably send people to mess with the houses so we couldn’t sell them at all.”

Kennedy’s face tightened. He clearly hadn’t thought of that.

He’d only met Patricia once, and even then, they barely spoke. Still, he’d gotten the sense that she wasn’t nearly as soft as she pretended to be.

“Just sell them, Kennedy. I don’t want to drag this out any longer.”
