Aiden was just too honest for his own good.
Patricia stayed quiet the whole drive back to Cloud Peak. When they arrived, she got out without a word. As soon as she left, Aiden called Jackson to fill him in on what happened.
“So, after you saw Wendy off, did you get anything out of her?” Jackson asked right away.
Aiden hesitated. “Uh… I didn’t ask.”
Jackson paused. “You didn’t ask? Seriously?”
“It didn’t even cross my mind!” Aiden admitted, sounding a little embarrassed.
Jackson let out a heavy sigh. “Are you for real? Use your brain! Miss doesn’t bother with Wendy because Wendy isn’t even in her league. But if Wendy came looking for her, she’s got something up her sleeve. If you don’t clear this up now, it’ll just come back around. When you walked her downstairs, that was your chance to actually talk to her, figure out what she wanted. Whether we help or not, at least we could try to stop this from happening again.”
“You’re a grown man, but your head’s just not screwed on right. What am I supposed to do with you?”
“Aiden… you’re in trouble. You’re so getting fired.”
Aiden, stung by the scolding, shot back, “Fired? Like you were?”
“Get lost, I was promoted. You— Hello? Hello?” Jackson stared at his phone, realizing the call had ended. “Unbelievable. He hung up on me. What a pain.”
Still muttering, Jackson headed home, swinging his bag of fried noodles.
Just as he walked into his apartment complex, he spotted Chelsea coming out of the mailroom. Without thinking, Jackson ducked behind a bush, heart racing.
She was terrifying.
That night, Patricia finished her shower and stepped out, only to find Marian coming in with a bowl of sweet soup.
Patricia frowned when she saw it. “I already ate.”
“Just have a little more. Otherwise, you’ll get hungry later,” Marian urged.
