“Haven’t I always been like this?” Miles grumbled, sounding a little put out. “I’m old. You really want me to learn how to fake a smile at my age?”
Lydia didn’t have the patience for his complaints. She pushed him toward the car, barely hiding her annoyance. “Go on, just get out of here. You’re really in the way.”
Miles could only stand there, at a loss for words.
Inside the dining room, the housekeeper brought out Patricia’s breakfast. Patricia stirred her noodles, and some broth splashed onto the table. Oliver quietly handed her a napkin. She took it, wiped up the mess, and kept her head down as she ate. Not long after, she just lost her appetite and put her chopsticks down.
Oliver watched her from across the table, his expression tight and worried. “That’s it? You’re done already?”
“I’m full,” Patricia said.
“Try to eat a bit more.”
Patricia shook her head and set her utensils aside. She looked at him silently, not backing down. The tension in the air was thick.
Oliver sat up straighter, clearly about to argue his point. Before he could start, Lydia walked in and put a gentle hand on Patricia’s shoulder. “If she doesn’t want to eat, then let her be. Feeling comfortable is what matters most.”
Oliver sounded frustrated. “Mom…”
“What? When I was pregnant with you, I hardly ate anything, and look at you, you turned out just fine.”
“Patricia’s too thin.”
“So what? It’s not the old days anymore. Who cares if she’s thin? As long as her checkups look good, that’s all you should worry about.”
Oliver looked like he was about to say something else, but Lydia didn’t give him the chance. She took Patricia’s arm and helped her up from her chair. “The tailor dropped off the dresses. Katie’s trying hers on now. Go have a look, too.”
