“Do you really need me to play chess with you?”
Oliver flopped onto the couch in the living room, tugging at the hem of his pants.
Jimmy stared at the chessboard, not even glancing up. “Your wife wants nothing to do with you, so why are you still chasing after her?”
He kept going. “You’re a grown man. Don’t you have any sense? But then again, I guess you’re kind of a late bloomer when it comes to being a dad. Makes sense you’d be a bit more clingy.”
Oliver lifted his leg and kicked Jimmy.
Jimmy just brushed off his pants, unfazed. “What, I can’t speak the truth? When Jaxon and I were your age, our kids were almost ready for elementary school.”
“Yeah, and who do you think raised those kids?” Oliver shot back.
It was him.
All him.
He was the sucker who did it.
Sure, getting married and having kids early might’ve seemed great for the adults, but it was pretty unfair to the kids. Back then, both Jaxon and Jimmy were always working away from home, sometimes only coming back every few months. If their jobs got too busy or they couldn’t get leave, sometimes they wouldn’t come home for a year or more. The kids pretty much grew up without their parents around.
“I remember when Roger was like five or six and saw you for the first time in forever. He thought you were a kidnapper and wanted to call the cops on you.”
“And you think that’s something to brag about?” Oliver scoffed.
Jimmy could only stare.
“Why dig up ancient history?”
“Is being an absent father supposed to be impressive now?”
Jimmy shrugged. “That’s what you were for.”
Oliver rolled his eyes. “Funny how your paycheck never included me.”
