Jimmy and Jaxon rushed to catch up.

Inside the hospital, the stark white room was packed with people.

Helena was curled up on the bed, hands covering her face. A fresh bandage circled her wrist, and she shook like a frightened animal.

Ashlee stood by her side, jewelry glittering in the harsh light. Her white Chanel suit was streaked with spots of blood. She was furious, partly at her daughter, mostly at the ruin of her expensive outfit.

She didn’t care about Helena’s injury. She just let the words fly. “I’ve given you everything. Good food, nice clothes, the best schools. I spent a fortune and pulled every string to get you into an elite university, hoping you’d bring some honor to this family. And look at you now. Can’t even get a man to stick around, and you end up like this. Helena, aren’t you embarrassed?”

“Other girls run into a guy and turn it into a fairy tale. How come, with you, it always turns into gossip and humiliation? You’ve read all those books, but not one of them taught you how to win a man’s heart?”

The words stung. Helena’s shoulders shook as she lowered her hands, eyes red with tears. She looked straight at Ashlee. “All this, just because you want me to land a rich husband, right? If you really wanted me to know how to get a man, why send me to Harvard? You should’ve just dropped me off at a nightclub and let the hostesses teach me all their tricks. You want me to act like a perfect lady, but also expect me to know how to seduce men. What am I supposed to be? Two people at once?”

Ashlee was caught off guard. “How dare you talk to your mother like that?”

“Why shouldn’t I?” Helena shot back. “I get smeared all over the news, humiliated, and you don’t say a word for me. You even told me to just disappear. What kind of mother does that? You just want some golden boy to marry in and make you look good. You think those guys are so easy to fool?”
