“Come on.”
Lydia took Patricia’s hand and led her to the tea room. As they walked, Lydia spoke softly. “I know my son. With his personality, he’s not the type to ever get the short end of the stick. I worry more about you. Children are everything to their parents. If a girl marries into our family and ends up unhappy, I couldn’t face your parents. I just want you to be okay.”
Lydia let go and opened a cabinet, pulling out a wooden box. She handed it over. “Here, open it.”
Patricia hesitated. Lydia’s gifts were always so generous, it made her nervous.
“What’s wrong?”
“Your gifts are always really expensive.”
Lydia smiled. “Silly girl, expensive or not, you deserve it. You’re worth it. Go ahead, take a look.”
Patricia opened the box. Inside was a pair of gold longevity lockets, the kind babies wear for good luck. Each one was pure gold, engraved with blessings, and in the center, a smooth jade stone gleamed. Just looking at them, you could tell how valuable they were.
“They’re for the baby. Do you like them?”
“I love them, thank you, Mom.” Patricia accepted the gift without hesitation. Since it was for the baby, refusing didn’t even cross her mind.
Lydia’s smile was gentle and full of warmth. After all these years, she’d seen enough ups and downs to be calm and open about everything.
“I’m glad you like them. The baby you’re carrying might be my last grandchild. I just want to give them all the best things.”
“Keep these for now. If I see anything else nice, I’ll get it too.”
“Thank you, Mom.” Patricia put the box away and thanked her sweetly. “I also got a present for Katie. I’ll give it to her later.”
“It’s the thought that counts. Even if you didn’t, Katie wouldn’t mind. When Sara, Colton, and Roger were born, she got plenty. In our family, nobody worries about being treated unfairly. Each of the kids has their own successes, so nobody’s hung up on who gets what from the parents.”
“The vibe at home is really relaxed,” Lydia said, patting Patricia’s back. “Don’t stress.”
