“After everything that just happened, how are we supposed to face each other here again?”
Hector stared at her, waiting for her to say more.
But Chelsea just shrugged, looking totally unbothered. “We’re adults. Might as well enjoy life while we can. We’ll run into each other all the time anyway, so why make things awkward?”
She picked up his hand and placed an orange in his palm. “As long as I’m not married, there’s always room for you by my side,” she said, almost playfully.
Then she added with a little grin, “Come on, don’t be mad.”
Hector tossed the orange onto the coffee table with a loud clunk. “Oranges give me heartburn,” he snapped.
Chelsea rolled her eyes. This guy was impossible. She scanned the table, thinking for a second, then offered, “Want me to peel you a pear instead?”
That was it for Hector. He glared at her, grabbed his jacket from the back of the couch, and stormed out. Just before leaving, he shot a look at Oliver and said, “I’m taking a vacation. Every single day you owe me over the years, I’m using them now.”
Let your wife’s family treat me like a joke. Go ahead, make me look like a fool. I hope you work yourself into the ground, you greedy boss.
Oliver watched Hector leave, feeling like the world was collapsing around him. He glanced over at Patricia, a trace of annoyance in his eyes.
Dinner was officially ruined.
Chelsea actually wanted to stay and enjoy Marian’s cooking, but the way Oliver was looking at her, she figured staying any longer would be a death wish. So she grabbed Jackson and left in a hurry.
Why Jackson? Easy. He was the best eating buddy around. He’d eat anything, had a huge appetite, and never wasted food. For someone like Chelsea, who wanted to try everything but hated wasting it, Jackson was basically the perfect partner in crime.
