“Is that not enough?”
Chelsea scrambled for a napkin, frantically dabbing the water off her jeans. “No… that’s not what I meant.”
What was happening here? Was she living in some weird dream where money just dropped from the sky? No way. Even if it did, there was no chance it would land on her. If life handed out miracles, her advisor would have snagged one before she ever could. Good things like this never came her way.
“So you think it’s too little? Fine. I’ll add another million.”
“Wait, hold on!” Chelsea shot out her hand to stop him. “What I mean is… why? Why are you doing this?”
“If you want to look at it logically, Hector doesn’t believe in marriage. I can’t sign up for the same, but you want me to keep this going with him. For how long, exactly? How far do you want me to take this?”
“At the very least, until Patricia finishes her postpartum recovery.”
Chelsea eyed him warily. She just knew Oliver was up to something. For him to bring this up out of nowhere, he must really need something from her. But why her? Since when did Oliver Padilla ever need her help?
“I’m just really curious,” she said, still not buying it.
“Hector’s in a bad mood and has basically gone on strike. Patricia’s in her last trimester, and she needs someone around. Hector just walked away, leaving half the company’s problems for me to handle. Now that I’m buried in work, I can’t be there for Patricia as much as I should. You don’t want your sister and your niece or nephew to go without, right?”
Wow. That was a serious guilt trip.
Chelsea pressed her tongue to the inside of her cheek and leaned back, staring at Oliver as she weighed his words.
“Are you sure if I keep seeing Hector, he’ll actually go back to work?” she asked. Wasn’t Hector on strike because he’d been pushed too far for years? What did she have to do with any of that?
