As Chelsea spoke, she pulled out her phone and opened her banking app, ready to transfer the eight million back to Oliver.
If the conversation had just ended with her keeping up appearances with Hector, maybe she wouldn’t have thought much of it. But the second Oliver mentioned there was something else, she knew things were about to get complicated.
Oliver felt his heart skip, but his face stayed perfectly calm as he sipped his tea. He’d mastered the art of looking chill no matter what was going on inside. Years spent in the business world had made that second nature. Watching Chelsea fumble with her phone, he didn’t even blink.
He finally spoke up with a little reminder. “You need to go to the bank in person for a transfer that size.” Basically, good luck trying to send the money back. She just didn’t have that kind of access.
Seriously?
Chelsea stared at him in disbelief, suddenly realizing she’d been set up.
“You already took the money, Ms. Lawrence. You’re not the type to go back on your word, right?” Oliver said, sounding completely calm. “If you do, I could always mention to your dad that you accepted eight million from me. That wouldn’t end well for you, would it? Not marrying gets your legs broken, taking my money gets your legs broken too. If I were you, I’d take the money, keep quiet, and enjoy the perks. You get paid, you get a guy, and you keep your legs. It’s the best deal you’re gonna get, don’t you think?”
Chelsea went quiet. After a long pause, she finally said, “Hector was right.”
“What did he say about me?”
“He said… never mind. It’s not worth talking to you about it.”
Oliver couldn’t help but feel like she was dangling something in front of him on purpose. Just say it already. Why leave him hanging?
He was still staring at her, waiting for more, when someone knocked on the tea room door.
