“Are there guests downstairs?”
When Oliver came upstairs, Patricia was in the walk-in closet changing clothes. She’d already swapped her soft cotton pajamas for a black knit dress and tights. The outfit made it obvious she was planning to head out.
“You’re going somewhere?”
“Yeah. I have to sign a contract at the office this afternoon.”
“Do you really have to go?”
“I do.” Patricia grabbed a loose cardigan from the rack. Almost all of her maternity clothes were bought by Oliver, always in matching sets. She never had to worry about putting together an outfit or stressing over what to wear. Luckily, her weight hadn’t changed much through her pregnancy. Besides her belly, her arms and legs were still slim.
Ever since she got pregnant, Oliver had turned into an expert on all things maternity. He was always on his phone, browsing through different apps, looking for anything that might upset a pregnant woman. One of the biggest complaints he found was about not having clothes that fit or looked good. Thanks to him, Patricia never had to give it a second thought.
One night, after they’d made love, she felt relaxed but not tired. She knew Oliver wouldn’t push for anything more, not while she was pregnant. She picked up his phone and opened one of his apps. The whole feed was filled with pregnancy tips and advice. She even spotted a comment where he’d asked about the best kind of maternity oil, and someone had replied to him.
In that moment, something stirred in her that she couldn’t quite put into words. All those little things, all those details, he was the one thinking about them. Except for the physical discomfort, every small chore about her pregnancy had ended up on Oliver’s shoulders. A man like him, with his money and status, could have handed everything off to someone else. But he didn’t. He took care of her himself, learned everything he could, and never hesitated to ask questions when he didn’t know something. How could she not love a man like that? His love was something she could show off to the world.
