“Did you hire some young people in your office? Like Gen Z? Or are they even younger?” Otherwise, there’s no way you’d know all these internet jokes.

“Now you want to manage my office too? What’s next, you want to take my job?”

“I’d never!”

“What wouldn’t you do? You’re brave enough to go out hooking up with people, so what’s left that you wouldn’t dare?”

“That’s not what you think. Work was driving me crazy, I just needed something different to shake things up! You know how it is with research, sometimes you get stuck and your brain feels like it’s turned to mush. I just wanted a little dopamine rush to get my mind working again, try to think outside the box for my career’s sake!”

“Excuses and nonsense!”

“Dad, really, just listen to me…”

The more Chelsea tried to explain, the angrier Atticus got. His eyes darkened and he glared at her, voice sharp. “Don’t say another word!”

Chelsea instantly wilted.

She knelt on the cushion, awkward and defeated, and turned so he was staring at the back of her head.

That only made Atticus even more annoyed.

She was supposed to be kneeling in remorse, but she looked like she was sulking.

“Next time you get up, at least fix the mess on the back of your head. Don’t make me install cameras in the icon corner just to keep you in line!”

Chelsea froze. Total panic.

She forgot to commit to the whole act.

Ugh, this was a disaster. Someone please come rescue her, like, right now.

Out in the living room, Maggie and Grandma sat together, both looking worried and straining to hear what was happening in the icon corner.

Neither dared to speak.

Then headlights swept across the yard. Maggie stood and headed to the window. “Who’s coming by this late?”

She peeked out and saw Patricia climbing out of a car, one hand steadying herself on the door, the other resting on her belly.

“It’s Pattie.”
