Sara reached into her ridiculously expensive Hermès bag and pulled out a neatly packed container of spicy beef. She held it out to Patricia like she was sharing a secret treasure. “My coworker recommended this. The first bite, I just knew you’d love it. So I went back after work and bought extra.”
Sara peeled open the plastic, and instantly that delicious, spicy aroma filled the room. Patricia’s eyes lit up.
“Go ahead, try it!”
“Come on, let’s eat before Uncle Oliver comes back.”
“What are you trying to do before I get back?”
Oliver’s voice cut through the air from the stairwell.
Sara jumped, fumbling to shove the food back in her bag, but she wasn’t quick enough. He’d already seen everything.
Oliver stared at her, gaze sharp, but with Patricia there, he forced himself to keep cool. He held out his hand. “What’s that? Let me see.”
Sara hesitated, clutching the bag. “It’s just... some snacks,” she muttered, not daring to pull it out. Everyone knew Oliver didn’t want Patricia eating random takeout.
“What snacks? Show me.”
Sara froze, then glanced helplessly at Patricia, silently begging for help.
Please, don’t let him take it. I’ll never hear the end of it.
Oliver crooked his finger. “Over here.”
Sara already knew how scary he could be when he was smiling like that. With no way out, she slowly, reluctantly, pulled out the spicy beef and the cold rabbit head, setting them on the table.
Oliver let out a laugh, the kind that meant he was completely done with all of this.
Seriously? She really would bring anything into this house. Did he buy her a million-dollar bag just so she could sneak in junk food?
“Uncle Oliver, I just thought Aunt Patricia’s been feeling down lately. I wanted to cheer her up with something she likes.”
