Patricia didn’t wake up until half past twelve. When she got up to use the bathroom, she noticed the other side of the bed was still perfectly smooth. It surprised her a little—Oliver hadn’t come home yet. She switched on the bedside lamp and was just about to get up when someone waiting in the living room called out softly, “Ma’am?”
She blinked, a little confused. “Why are you upstairs?” Oliver had always been strict about who could come up to the master bedroom. Only a few trusted people ever set foot here, and for cleaning, Marian always had to supervise. Having someone from the night staff upstairs like this was a first.
“The master asked me to stay here tonight, in case you needed anything. I’m supposed to call him right away if something comes up.”
“Is he still busy downstairs?”
“Yes, ma’am. Things aren’t over yet.”
The staff member heard some movement from the bedroom and asked, “Do you need any help, ma’am?”
Patricia shook her head. “No, I’m just going to the bathroom.”
After she finished and got back into bed, Patricia picked up her phone and sent a message to Mr. Padilla.
Still not done?
On the other side, Oliver saw his screen light up. He was surprised to see Patricia’s name.
Not yet. Did I wake you?
Just got up for the bathroom. Noticed you weren’t back, so I thought I’d check.
Any idea when you’ll be finished? she typed.
Hard to say. Go back to sleep, okay? Be good.
Patricia stared at the screen for a moment, then set her phone down and quickly drifted off again.
As she neared her thirty-seventh week, her doctor made a point of reminding her that she was now full term. The baby could come at any moment, so she needed to be ready. When they left the hospital, Patricia’s palms were damp with sweat. Oliver reached over and took her hand, feeling how much she was shaking. As soon as they got in the car, he pulled her into his arms.
“Don’t let your mind run wild,” he murmured.
She nodded, making a small sound of agreement. Even so, she was unusually quiet for the rest of the ride. Only when they passed the gates into Cloud Peak did Patricia finally speak, her voice tentative.
“Could you... maybe not go to the office for a while?”
