They stood on either side of her, careful and attentive, making sure she was okay.
Patricia couldn’t bend down, so she just watched as Sara fed the cats. They were about to head inside when Lincoln and a few Pacific Capital execs rushed up, led by Johns, making their way toward the tea room on the first floor. When they saw Patricia, everyone stopped and greeted her politely. “Mrs. Padilla.”
“Work stuff?” Patricia asked, sounding casual.
Lincoln nodded. “Yeah, there’s a problem with a merger. We need to start over.”
Patricia got it right away. She gave a little nod. “Go on, don’t let me keep you.”
Since the group seemed to be in a hurry, Patricia figured something urgent must have happened. She didn’t wait for Oliver, planning to wash up and get to bed early. But just as she grabbed her pajamas and was about to go into the bathroom, Oliver came upstairs.
She blinked at him in surprise. “What are you doing up here? Don’t you have work?”
“They’re talking over the plan. I wanted to help you get ready first.”
“I can handle it myself.”
“It’s fine. The work won’t be done tonight anyway. You come first.”
Patricia hesitated. “Are you sure? Lincoln and the others are waiting downstairs.”
“I’m sure.”
Oliver slid his arm around her waist and steered her into the bathroom, his voice warm and soft. “Relax.”
When Patricia finished in the bathroom, it was already nine. Usually that meant time for her massage, which would carry her to nine thirty at least.
She called Marian upstairs and nudged Oliver, telling him to get going.
Mr. Padilla gave her a teasing smile. “Trying to get rid of me? Are you tired of me already?”
Patricia shot him a look. “Don’t be silly. I just don’t want people thinking I’m some kind of temptress, distracting you from your work.”
