Hector’s injuries were serious, and his recovery seemed to drag on with no end in sight. Even when he did get better, no one knew if he’d ever make it back to the company.
Patricia’s days had been calm, almost peaceful in comparison, while Oliver’s exhaustion was obvious to anyone who looked his way.
That night, well past midnight, the baby just wouldn’t settle. Patricia could barely lie down without feeling like she couldn’t catch her breath. She gave up trying to sleep, carefully propping herself up and easing out of bed, one hand supporting her belly. She shuffled over to the armchair in the living room, reclined it halfway, and lay back, gently patting her stomach in hopes the little one would calm down. All the while, she tried to be as quiet as possible so she wouldn’t disturb Oliver.
Around three in the morning, Oliver, half-asleep, reached out for Patricia, searching for the familiar curve of her belly. His hand landed on empty sheets. Instantly, he was wide awake. He threw off the covers and, without even grabbing his slippers, rushed barefoot to the bathroom. When he saw it was empty, he hurried to the bedroom door and pulled it open.
The door swung wide, and he spotted Patricia’s outline on the sofa. His heart twisted so hard it felt like it might stop.
He crossed the room and crouched down in front of her. Carefully, he took her hand from her belly and pressed it to his lips, kissing it softly.
Guilt hit him all at once, flooding over him so fast it left him breathless in the quiet of the night.
Patricia woke with a start, feeling his warm lips on her hand. She turned her head and saw it was Oliver. Her nerves eased, and she tried to pull her hand away, but he wouldn’t let go.
She whispered, “Did I wake you?”
“No,” he said, his voice rough and thick, almost like he’d been crying. “Why aren’t you in bed?”
“I just can’t get comfortable. The baby’s so active, and I didn’t want to wake you with all my tossing and turning.”
