The second Oliver walked into the living room, he spotted Patricia curled up on the sofa with Sara, both of them totally engrossed in something on the tablet. His hurried steps relaxed a little. He shrugged off his jacket, took the warm towel Marian handed him, and wiped his hands as he made his way over.
“What are you two up to?”
“Uncle Oliver, we’re looking at baby names. Grandpa sent over a whole bunch,” Sara said, her eyes bright.
“Oh, let me see.” Oliver reached for the tablet.
Sara handed it to him and explained, “Grandpa really wants to stick with the family tradition. Almost every name on here follows that pattern.”
Oliver skimmed the list, nodded, and handed the tablet back. Then he reached out, trying to help Patricia up from the couch. “Come on, I’ll help you get ready for bed.”
Patricia gently pushed his hand away and looked up at him. “No rush. Why don’t you sit down and rest for a bit? Have you eaten yet?”
“Not yet.”
“Go eat first. I can wait to get ready for bed.”
“You barely slept last night and you had to go to the office today. You should really get some rest.”
Patricia shook her head, her voice soft. “I took a nap this afternoon. I’m not tired yet. You go eat.”
Oliver studied her for a moment, making sure she was really okay, then finally nodded. “Alright. I’ll be quick.”
“There’s no need to rush. Take your time,” Patricia said with a small smile.
As soon as Oliver left, Sara snuggled up to Patricia’s side, her arms wrapped around Patricia’s arm. She poked Patricia’s belly with a playful finger. “Hey little one, when you come out, remember to stick to your daddy, not your mommy, okay?”
Patricia laughed. “And why’s that?”
“Come on, isn’t it obvious? If the baby’s glued to you, you’ll be exhausted! My cousin’s baby only wanted her. Even with a nanny and a maternity nurse at home, she couldn’t go anywhere. She had to take the baby into the bathroom with her. It was honestly a little scary to watch.”
“I really hope you don’t end up like that, Aunt Patricia.”
