Patricia felt rattled.
Every time she closed her eyes that night, scenes from the documentary kept flashing in her mind, all that blood and chaos. She was tired, but she just couldn’t bring herself to sleep.
She glanced over at Oliver. He was still fast asleep, oblivious. Quietly, she grabbed her phone and slipped under the covers, searching the app for information about the side effects of natural childbirth.
Scrolling through the comments and explanations from other women, her palms started sweating. Her fingertips shook as she held the phone tighter.
Then she read one line. In the end, all the pain and damage from childbirth lands on the woman. Suddenly, it felt like something had her by the throat. She couldn’t breathe.
Patricia quickly turned off her phone and threw the blanket off her head, gulping in air. She took deep, shaky breaths, trying to calm down.
A few seconds later, the small bedside lamp clicked on. Oliver sat up, eyes clouded with sleep but full of concern. “Hey, what’s wrong?” His voice was rough and anxious.
“It’s nothing,” she mumbled.
“Bad dream?” He seemed to know what was going on. Carefully, he avoided her belly and pulled her into his arms. “Come here. Let me hold you.”
The second her belly touched him, the baby started moving again, stretching and rolling around like it was practicing tai chi. Patricia couldn’t get comfortable lying down, so she tried to sit up.
Oliver grabbed the remote and raised the head of their bed, making it easier for her to recline. He’d switched out their old mattress as soon as her bump made it tough to lie flat.
Finally, half-sitting, she could actually breathe again.
“Baby’s acting up?” Oliver asked softly.
Patricia nodded. Now she finally understood what Selara had said, about wanting to give up completely by the end of a twin pregnancy. The last trimester really was a whole new level of torture. Anything could set off her emotions.
