From the start, Chelsea knew he wasn’t the marrying type, but she still couldn’t help getting tangled up with him. It was obvious she was lowering herself just to be closer to him. He’d always been the one everyone looked up to, so why would he ever be the one to compromise? He was too proud for that. So proud, he barely noticed his own feelings. He ignored the simple truth that emotions can change over time. Maybe, somewhere along the way, he had already fallen for her, but he just hadn’t realized it yet.
Patricia’s tone was light, but you could hear the frustration underneath. “Honestly, I don’t think they’re right for each other.”
“If a guy really loves someone, he doesn’t care about his pride or his ego. If he’s still comparing pros and cons, he just doesn’t love her enough. And if we’re being practical, with Uncle’s status, why shouldn’t Chelsea find someone who actually treats her like a queen? Why does she have to lower her standards just to make things work with him?”
The world is practical, after all. Everyone looks out for themselves. If love turns into a calculation, what’s even the point?
With that, Oliver understood exactly where Patricia stood. She wasn’t on board with the relationship. No support, no approval. And he had a feeling she wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
For days after, Patricia was so worried about Chelsea that she could barely sleep. She used to go to bed early, but lately she was up past eleven, calling Maggie all the time. Oliver tried reminding her to rest, but she just brushed him off. If he said anything more, she’d get irritated.
By the time she hit thirty-six weeks, the doctor visits became regular. Every time, the doctor would remind her she was almost full-term and needed to watch the baby’s movements closely.
All of that just made her even more anxious and restless at night.
One evening at eight, Mr. Padilla came out of his study, just like always, ready to help Patricia get ready for bed. Her belly was getting so big that she needed someone with her when she showered, just in case.
