In the hospital suite’s little sitting area, Atticus’s phone buzzed and the sound cut right through the quiet. The moment it started, Grandma, Maggie, and Chelsea all shot him the same look, like he’d just broken the spell of peace in the room. He pulled out his phone, ready to hang up, but then he saw who was calling. Miles. Not just Patricia’s father-in-law, but also his boss.
With everything the Padilla family was going through, there was no way Miles would be calling unless it was about Patricia. Atticus knew he couldn’t let it go to voicemail.
He slipped into the hallway and answered. Miles asked about Patricia and the baby first, wanting to know if they were alright. Once Atticus reassured him, Miles opened up about how things were at home. He said the family simply couldn’t get away right now, that it was a bad time, and apologized for not being able to be there for Patricia’s delivery. Miles promised, as soon as things settled down, he would come to Riverdale himself to see Patricia and their new granddaughter.
Life and death had collided at the worst possible moment. No one wanted it this way.
“Patricia’s really understanding,” Atticus told him. “My wife talked to her about it a few days ago. She said she gets it. A new life has years ahead, but you only get one chance to say goodbye. She said the old man’s funeral mattered more right now.”
Miles let out a long sigh. “She’s been through so much. I feel awful.”
They spoke for a few minutes more, but Atticus could hear voices in the background on Miles’s end. He said goodbye and ended the call.
He was just about to head back into the room when someone dashed out of the elevator and ran straight toward him. It was Oliver. His clothes were wrinkled, his hair a mess, and he looked like he hadn’t stopped running since he left wherever he’d come from.
“They’re both asleep. Slow down, you’ll wake them,” Atticus said, steadying Oliver with a hand on his shoulder. “Jackson’s gone to Cloud Peak to grab you some clean clothes. Grandma said you need to shower in the spare room before you see Patricia and the baby. She says it’s important.”
“Got it,” Oliver said, nodding right away. He had just come straight from the funeral, so he understood.
