Oliver wanted to laugh, but he held it in. At home, his wife was so delicate, he had to be extra careful with every word. At work, Hector was even more sensitive. If Oliver so much as cracked a smile, Hector would probably leap up on his one good leg and start yelling.

“You’ve worked hard, Mr. McKee.”

“Working isn’t hard. Living is.”

“How about I bump up your bonus by twenty percent? Does that make you feel better, Mr. McKee?”

“I’m not satisfied. I don’t need more money.”

“I get it. What you need is Chelsea. Lucky for you, she’s right here at the company.”

Hector let out a dry, frustrated laugh. Just thinking about how Oliver had tricked him into this mess made him even angrier. Oliver promised Chelsea was working here, but as soon as Hector arrived, he was buried in endless paperwork and back-to-back meetings.

The board office was a madhouse. Every executive seemed to have lost their mind. There were mountains of documents waiting for his signature, and even when he went to the bathroom, someone kept watch in case he tried to escape. If he didn’t sign, work would grind to a halt. No work meant no results for the quarter. No results meant no bonuses.

Honestly, if he tried to hang himself, someone would probably tell him to wait until Oliver got back before he did it.

As for finding Chelsea? He never even made it to the elevators before someone blocked his way and dragged him back. To top it off, his leg was still messed up. He couldn’t even run if he wanted to.

He was beyond frustrated.

“Are you even a real person?”

“I’m not an object. I’m a person,” Oliver answered, not giving Hector a chance to get up. He shrugged off his coat, tossed it over the back of the chair across from Hector, and sat down to work right in front of him.

They kept at it from nine all the way until eleven thirty. It wasn’t until Lincoln brought lunch in that Oliver finally rubbed his sore neck and looked up from the stack of files.
