Mr. Padilla just felt wronged.
"How could I not care?"
Patricia’s eyes were red, and it was hard to tell if she was upset for the baby or just angry. "If you really cared, would you just say she’ll be fine after a good cry?"
The little one lying on her shoulder must have picked up on the tension. Her quiet sniffles turned into loud sobs again.
The nanny saw the fight brewing but hadn’t figured out what to do before Marian gave her a look. She understood and quietly left the room, taking the nanny with her.
Now it was just the three of them.
Oliver sighed, looking helpless. He took the baby from Patricia, settled her against his shoulder, and started rocking her gently. With his free arm, he pulled Patricia close, holding her tight.
"She’s brand new to this world. It’s normal for her to feel a little lost. Don’t stress yourself out."
"I’m not overthinking," Patricia muttered, sounding hurt. "It just breaks my heart to see her cry so hard."
Mr. Padilla felt stuck. He remembered something Lydia once told him. Your first kid, you raise by the book. You worry about everything, run to the doctor at the smallest thing. With the second, you’re a lot more chill. As long as they’re healthy, it’s fine. By the third, you’re just happy they survive.
It was a joke, but it felt true right now. He and Patricia were brand new at this, and of course they were anxious. They worried if their daughter was eating enough, sleeping enough, or if she was upset. That worry started to trap them both, making everything harder.
Sigh. Parenting.
The baby, safe in her dad’s arms, started to calm down. Soon, she stopped crying. She lay there quietly, like a tiny kitten, long lashes still wet with tears.
Patricia’s heart ached at the sight. She gently dabbed the tears away with a soft tissue.
That night, Patricia didn’t get to bed until eleven. When Oliver came out of the shower, he saw her lying there, rubbing her back.
