“Oliver,” Atticus said, his voice carrying that unmistakable authority of someone older and in charge. “Mr. McKee wants to attend the business conference, too. Looks like you’re off the hook for now.”
Oliver’s mind raced. Was Atticus seriously trying to drag him into this mess?
Patricia, standing close by, could feel the tension in the air and had one instinct—get out of there fast. Chelsea had already lost interest in Hector, and Patricia had zero desire to get sucked into whatever drama the men were cooking up. But Oliver wasn’t about to let her slip away. His hand clamped down firmly on her waist, giving her a quick, punishing squeeze. The sting made Patricia’s eyebrows knit together.
With no other choice, she called out, “Uncle…”
Atticus’s expression softened the tiniest bit when he heard her. “Yes?”
“Uncle, I’m going to take Chelsea over there to see the baby.”
As soon as Patricia spoke, Chelsea’s eyes went wide and bright, practically sparkling with hope. Sisters really were a gift. It was like she was thinking, You’re the best, sis! Truly, family comes through when you need it.
Atticus shot them both a look that said he wasn’t fooled, but he finally gave in. “Go on, then.”
Chelsea grabbed Patricia’s arm and made her getaway, practically running for freedom. As Patricia walked past Mr. Padilla, she couldn’t help but give him a look full of accusation. Seriously? Trying to use me as your human shield? Not a chance.
With Chelsea gone, Atticus suddenly seemed more willing to chat with Hector. Not far away, a few curious onlookers watched the scene unfold.
“Did you see how Mr. Lawrence was glaring at Mr. McKee just now?” one whispered.
“Now they’re just standing there, chatting like old friends. What gives?”
