The hundred-day celebration for the baby brought everyone together. Both Atticus and Hector showed up, but it was obvious Atticus was on guard. He kept Chelsea so close, she barely had room to breathe, never letting her out of his sight. Everyone knew exactly who he was worried about.
People had been gossiping for ages, wondering if something was going on between Chelsea and Hector, maybe even thinking wedding bells were in their future. But seeing them now, it was clear there was no happy ending in sight. They were more likely to start a fight than plan a wedding. Honestly, it was a miracle things hadn’t already blown up.
“Poor Chelsea,” Sara whispered, tugging at Roger’s sleeve. Her big eyes followed Chelsea around the room, full of sympathy. “She looks like she’s about to cry.”
“Why don’t you go save her?” Roger teased.
Sara gawked at him. “Are you serious? If I tried, her dad would probably kick me all the way across the ocean.”
Roger just shrugged, saying nothing.
Sara leaned in, lowering her voice. “What exactly did Mr. McKee do to make her dad so defensive?”
“It’s the whole ‘I don’t want to get married’ thing,” Roger replied. “Basically, he wants to sleep around without taking responsibility. No one wants their daughter marrying a guy like that. Who’d trust him?”
Sara frowned. “But what if Mr. McKee changed?”
Roger shook his head. “There’s a difference between changing because you want to and changing because you have to. And let’s be real, some people never really change.”
Sara let out a sigh. This whole thing was so messy. If Mr. McKee wanted to step up, it was a problem. If he didn’t, that was also a problem. Her dad wasn’t giving him any chance to prove himself. It was like he was shut out before he even started.
“But…” Roger started, letting the word hang in the air. “There’s still hope.”
