“Thank you, Miss Quincy,” Tyson said, his voice sincere.
“Think nothing of it, Mr. Goodwin. It was a small thing,” Jocelyn replied. “But why were you drinking your sorrows away alone? Did something go wrong at the conference? Or perhaps…”
A bitter smile touched Tyson's lips. “Nothing went wrong. It's a personal matter.”
Jocelyn studied the dagger in her hand, a strange smile on her face. “Now that you mention it, I seem to recall hearing that you and Miss Thorne—Winona, was it?—were together for five years.”
The mention of Winona's name was like a knife to the chest. But Jocelyn had just done him a huge favor, so he couldn't be rude. He forced a smile. “Miss Quincy, I'd rather not talk about it. Was there something else you wanted to see me about?”
“Mr. Goodwin, are you the kind of man who runs from his problems?”
“What good would it do not to?” Tyson rubbed his temples wearily. “I've tried. I tried to get her back, but she's with someone else now. She… she doesn't want me anymore.”
“Then you fight to get her back.”
Her words made Tyson look up, a realization dawning on him. “Miss Quincy, why are you so interested in my history with Nona?”
“You still call her Nona. You still love her,” Jocelyn said, her expression one of feigned sympathy for his deep love. “So how can you just give up?”
At that moment, an attendant brought in a cup of tea and set it in front of Tyson.
“It's a sobering tea. It should help you feel better,” Jocelyn said thoughtfully.
Tyson managed a weak smile. “That's very kind of you, Miss Quincy.” He picked up the cup and drank most of it in one go.
Jocelyn set the dagger down on the coffee table. “Not so fast, Mr. Goodwin. We can take our time discussing the details.”
An hour later, Tyson left the suite.
After he was gone, a hidden door in the room opened, and the blonde woman from the bar stepped out.
“You did well,” Jocelyn said flatly, tossing a stack of cash onto the floor.
The woman didn't seem to mind. She bent down to scoop it up, grinning. “Call me anytime you have another job like this.”
Jocelyn waved her away dismissively.
