Sam’s POV
“Zola.” I wanted to hear her familiar voice before I opened my eyes. Before I faced reality again. “Zola, are u there?” | called out again, hoping I wasn’t alone. I never want to be without her again. Zola didn’t respond, but I could hear her whimpering. After coaxing her to speak to me, her words were not what I expected. “He intended to kill us,” she said eventually. I quickly understood why she was upset. Zola will only ever have one mate, one true love. He is supposed to love her unconditionally, and he wanted her dead. I grew to love Axel with time, but it was nothing compared to the love she had for Gunner. She was processing the fact that despite the mate bond, Gunner was prepared to kill her and kill anyone who stood in his way.
I have heard of people getting second-chance mates, but that union has to come from the goddess herself, and I’m not sure if I believe in her anymore. Because she sure as hell doesn’t believe in me. We could always take a chosen mate if Zola wanted to. I am not sure where I would stand on that, as I am not sure I would trust another man again.
“No matter what, we have each other,” I told Zola, trying to offer her some comfort. Then I whimpered. Remembering how I not only wished for death to take me. That he almost did. If that had happened, we would have been parted forever.Knowing I was alive and awake. I realized I was in discomfort, not pain. I realized I could breathe without it hurting. I opened my eyes to see a young woman. She was slightly older than me, with a slim face and dark hair. She was wearing a white coat. I recognized her face, but I didn’t know who she was. She stood at the side of the room while I tried to figure out how I knew her. “She saved us, Ellie saved us,” Zola told me. I vaguely remember the woman referring to herself as Ellie. But it was as if it were a dream.
I wanted to speak, but my throat hurt because it was so dry and scratchy. A faint, “Wa…” was all I could say before a new pain appeared. As if Ellie knew what I wanted, she offered me a drink. Flashbacks of Lily offering me a drink made me refuse the glass of water Ellie had offered me.
Ellie’s calming voice reminded me that she had saved me.
I don’t know how long I had been here, but she could have done anything to me, but she didn’t. “Who is she?” | questioned Zola.
“I don’t know. But she is a shifter,” Zola responded. Then Zola’s tone changed. “A strange shifter saved us. Not someone from our pack. A stranger.” She howled in anger and frustration. Our pack is supposed to protect us. But we’re betrayed by our family and friends.
“It wasn’t just Ellie,” I reminded Zola as I burst into tears, thinking of Garth. I was alive today because of him. He was dead today because of me. I could feel an arm touching me. I wanted to freak out, but knowing Ellie wasthe only one in the room, and she meant me no harm, caused me to stay calm.
Ellie explained that when the human doctor arrived, he would demand I go with him. Because I am in my human form and in a human town. He was a human doctor, and she wasn’t.
My only chance of staying with her was to act like I was. scared to death of him. Ellie promised she would explain everything later, but when he got here, I was to act as if he wanted to kill me.
So, when William arrived. I acted as if Lily had just walked into the room. It was easy to act petrified, given what she did to me. The human doctor agreed to leave me with Ellie for a short while.
“People are predictable. They’re self-centered and only care about themselves. Their souls are ugly. But you did something that showed me you have a beautiful soul.” Both Zola and I were confused by her words. She doesn’t even know us. Ellie seemed to know what I was thinking.” The most beautiful souls aren’t the ones with the pretty eyes or beautiful faces. The people with the most beautiful souls are the ones who walk out of the fire alone, then take the time and energy to go back for the rest.” She lifted my chin. “You were on death’s door and could have run to save yourself, but you didn’t. You went back for those kids. That is why I’m helping you, Sam.
Because your beautiful soul is worth saving. The world is a better place with people like you in it.” She said seriously while looking into my eyes. Her words of kindness struck me, and my heart started beating a little faster.
“Ellie is right; you’re worth saving, Samantha,” Zola told me.
“Sam. I’m Sam from now on.” I don’t want any association with my past life. From now on, I will make my future. One where I can be who I want to be. A life where I can be me.
