Reagan’s POV
It felt strange walking into the Alpha King’s office. It was once a place where I spent a lot of my time, as it belonged to me. But now l am no longer the Alpha King, and it belongs to Caspian. So much has changed since I have been gone. Yet this room remained the same; Caspian hadn’t changed a thing. But everything in this room is a memory for us both. Portraits of our elders, pictures of our parents, and photos of us from our youth. There is even a picture of the family we were so close to once upon a time. I cherished that picture; it was our mom’s last photo before her murder.
A man was sitting as a guest at Caspian’s desk. But my business here was to meet the Wolf Council. The meeting room was a separate room, soundproofed from the office.
Phillip opened the door for me, and I made my way inside.
Every man got to his feet and bowed his head in respect.
I am no longer their superior, but they treated me as if I were. I took a seat opposite my brother, who now sits at the head of the table. Everyone sat down, except for Richard. He was a senior member of the Wolf Council. ” Your…” he started to say, but then stopped himself and looked at Caspian. “Reagan. I can’t tell you how good it is to see you,” he said while smiling. I have known Richard all my life. We may have different opinions at times, but both of us had the best interests of the kingdom at heart.
During our previous meeting, I broached the unpopularsubject of appointing Alphas instead of the traditional hereditary system. Given the abuse of authority by some, Richard liked the idea. But a lot opposed it. Stating that it is a person’s birthright to become Alpha. They are wrong, though. The power was given to that family generations ago by the crown.
As everyone took their seats. Richard announced that he wanted to handle the investigation into my attack.
Caspian agreed that an investigation needed to take place, but he wanted to do it. “Your Majesty, with all due respect. If it was an organized attack. The orchestrators attacked one Alpha King. Who’s saying they wouldn’t attack another? Who’s saying they wouldn’t be successful next time?” Richard told him, and he was right. Caspian may not like it. But he can’t risk his life to find out what happened to me. He needs to act with his head, not his heart. He should know this. Besides, if he is not in the palace. How can he build a relationship with Sam?
“That may not be a bad idea, Caspian,” I told him. I didn’t want to mindlink him in front of the Wolf Council, as that would be rude. “You can stay here and help me with my recovery.” Caspian looked at me curiously, and I gave him a small wink.
“Do you remember what happened that day? Your… Sorry, old habits. Reagan,” Richard said, apologizing.
“I remember I was going to the Crescent Moon Pack with Dale and Bart. Bart was driving, and Dale started having a seizure. Bart stopped the car so we could help Dale, whichwas when the car was hit by a truck. Callan tells me that it was then that he couldn’t sense me. Dozens of wolves were approaching, and although he was prepared to fight alone, he knew he wouldn’t be able to win as he was losing consciousness. So he ran. He ran until he blacked out.”
“Sounds like Dale was poisoned. I bet you all were,”
Richard stated sourly.
“What happened to Dale and Bart?” I inquired.
Richard looked around the room. “Their remains were discovered among the bodies that the rogues
Slaughtered. As was your leg. Which is why everyone thought you were dead.”
“I might have been if Sam and her sister, Ellie, hadn’t found me.” Had they saved my life in more ways than one?
Alpha King or not, I will kick his ass if she is unhappy.
“I’ll ask Sam’s sister if she is willing to speak to you. Or better yet, if she would allow you to visit her. She is a lone wolf and not affiliated with any pack.”
“A lone wolf?” Henry said, grimacing. All eyes turned to him. “They are as untrustworthy as rogues. You have certainly lowered your standards, Reagan. I can’t believe you’re suggesting a member of the Wolf Council speaks to her.” He may well have just called Sam and Ellie lepers.
I’m fed up with him and his narrow-minded comments.”
Ill tell you what, Henry. If you don’t like it, you can leave.
Leave this room, leave this palace, leave this kingdom.
Because change is coming, and you won’t like any of it. No matter their status, I owe them both a life debt, and I will repay it. Henry cleared his throat and got to his feet. “I have business elsewhere that I need to attend to. Good day, gentlemen,” he said before leaving. As my meeting with the Wolf council came to an end. I shook hands with them all. Richard was the last to leave. “I’ll remain in the palace and get the formal reports of the attack, piece everything together. Let me know what Sam’s sister says, and I wilt go to her promptly. I promise you, Reagan. I will make sure the investigation is thorough. An attempt was made on your life, if anyone was involved. They need to answer for it.”
