Alpha’s Betrayal Luna’s Revenge (Samantha) novel Chapter 43

Reagan’s POV

It took Caspian and me several days to review and correct all the files he had signed. Like hell was I doing it alone, I wasn’t the Alpha King anymore. Caspian needed to learn how to fix his mistakes. The Welf Council was not happy either, as their workload had just increased. But they should have done their damned jobs in the first place. “I hope you have learned from this,” I told Caspian.

“Reagan. I’ve taken full responsibility for my screw-ups.

But I don’t know how these files made it past these reports got past the Wolf Council without being investigated.” He told me this daily, and he raised a good point; whoever was responsible for the investigation knew they were passing incomplete files to Caspian. I just can’t figure out how they got him to sign them off. One, maybe two, could have slipped past him in the early days.

But there were dozens, and it had been going on for weeks.

“Could you live with yourself knowing an innocent person suffered or died because of your ignorance? You were fortunate this time that no one lost their lives. Next time, you may not be so lucky.”

“There won’t be a next time,” he told me sternly. He then picked up a file. “Wait,” he said. “Put these in date order.” He must have remembered something. I did as he asked while he pulled out a calendar from a drawer. He must have been scribbling on it for ten minutes when hestarted breathing heavily. He then pounded his fists on his desk. “ARGH, that fucking bitch.” He yelled. Pounding his desk repeatedly, “How was I so stupid? So easily manipulated?” I waited for him to calm down and tell me what he knew. Eventually, he looked at me. “It was all her.

It was Evelyn. She either rushed me to sign stuff or she distracted me when the Wolf Council members were present. That bitch set me up. I’m going to kill her.”

“There is only one person to blame for this, is the one l am looking at.” Caspian looked angrier than ever as I pointed this out to him. “No matter what is going on, no matter how distracted you are. You are the Alpha King. You are responsible.” He shook his head and began to pace around the room in anger.

“How could I have been so easily manipulated?” He stopped pacing and looked at me. “Wait, the Wolf Council is on this? They have to have been.” He pointed out. “Was Evelyn working for them?”

“It still doesn’t matter. These files got past you. It is your say that finalizes everything.”

“I was distracted.” He yelled at me.

“And people could have suffered because of it. Make sure it doesn’t happen again, Caspian. The kingdom has to come first, always.” I scolded my brother. He should know this. He watched our father and me do the job for long enough. Or was that the problem? My entire life had been dedicated to preparing me for the role. Until ldisappeared, Caspian never thought he would have to da it; he wasn’t prepared.

As we tried to figure everything out, Richard walked through the door. “Do you think Richard was in on this?” Caspian mindlinked me.

“I don’t think so. His name was on some of the completed files. I think we can trust him,” I replied. Caspian nodded in agreement.

Richard was returning from his trip to South View. He looked pleased as he walked through the door. No doubt he was pleased; he was away from Ellie. “Nice to see you again, Richard,” I greeted him. He came over and shook my hand. “I’m glad you made it back in one piece.” He placed a file on the desk and took a seat. “Did you have an eventful and informative trip?” No doubt Ellie was as pleasant with him as she was with me.

“I didn’t know what to expect at first. In my long life, I have never had any interaction with lone wolves. But what can I say?” Here it comes, no doubt Ellie was horrible and hostile toward him. “How does an amazingly talented and pleasant young woman? Not live in a pack somewhere?”

“Say what?” I think my ears are deceiving me. Did Richard

just call Ellie amazing and pleasant?

“You never told me how beautiful she was, Reagan. I would have presented myself better if I’d known.” He went on.”ve never met her in person, Richard. I’ve only spoken to her on the phone.” Richard looked as if he was thinking about something.

“Well, if I were a younger man looking for a chosen mate.

“Thanks to Ellie, I now know the location where you were found, Reagan. But through speaking to her, I have a lot of other questions that need answering.”

“Such as?” Caspian enquired.

“Where were you attacked? What caused Dale’s seizure?

What happened to your car? What rendered you unconscious and weakened, Callan? How did the rogues get Dales and Bart’s bodies miles from where they died?

How did a solid silver bear trap randomly find itself in your path, causing you to become an amputee?”

I looked at Caspian, who was looking at me. “That’s a lot toinvestigate in the short space of time I want it done in, Caspian stated.

“That’s not all. Ellie’s last question got me. She questioned how your severed leg got mixed in with all the bodies? It was in the woods when she saved your life.” Richard paused. “We all agree that we think someone went to great lengths to make us think you were dead. But why?” he snickered. “It’s been a long time since | talked so openly with anyone. I may even go back to South View and try to entice young Ellie to join the Wolf Council. She would be running the place in no time.”

There he goes again, praising Ellie. After Richard left, Caspian, and I talked for hours about the investigation.

Give Richard and Ellie their due. They raised some excellent points. Richard was going to need help. But who can be trusted?
